Triumph Hurdle profile

(Friday 13th March - 1.30pm) - Triumph Hurdle Race Entries

Four year old novice hurdlers get their own race in the shape of the Triumph Hurdle, run over two miles and a furlong on the new course. It was first run during the festival in 1965, but the race dates back to 1939. Since the introduction of a juvenile handicap hurdle in 2006 it has become more punter-friendly.

RACE TRENDS:

  • 12 of the last 14 winners won last time out
  • 17 of the last 19 winners had at least three prior starts over hurdles
  • 13 of the last 15 winners had won at least twice over hurdles
  • Only one winner rated lower than 80 on the flat since 1996
  • 10 of the last 15 winners started in the first four of the betting
  • 3 of 36 Irish horses made the frame in the last six years

"This horse goes to Cheltenham and I think I've finally got my dream to have one as good as him for the Festival. It's taken a long time but I've made it. It was a good performance today - he annihilated them. I hope to give him one more run before the Triumph. If they get good ground at Cheltenham, it will take a hell of a horse to beat him. There will be Monaghan flags and jerseys at Cheltenham as well as a few surprises I won't tell you about yet!"

Jumbo Rio

"He's a lovely horse and I'd only had him about four weeks before Punchestown (in December). I didn't really know if the horse had improved since then, but I think he must have. He's a speed horse and hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here."

Lethal Weapon

"He ran a great race at Leopardstown in what was a decent contest. Whether it is Triumph Hurdle form we'll have to see, but that would be the way we are looking at this stage. It's great to have won a Grade 1 with him already and I would say it is unlikely he will have a run before Cheltenham if that's the way we go with him. When he gets back from his break, the decision will be made whether he goes for the Triumph or whether he goes elsewhere."

Starluck

“He was very impressive and we're delighted with him. It's a step in the right direction for us. He’s a real improver and hopefully the spring will bring out the best in him. He'll have a couple of weeks holiday and we’ll get stuck into him for the Triumph after that. It’s possible he'll go back to Kempton but it's not a certainty yet. If he needs to run that’s where he'll go. If he doesn’t, he'll go straight to Cheltenham. We're very excited about it and we’re absolutely thrilled to have him. The opportunity for me is a big one.”

Walkon

"He's in very good form and I would now like to take him for a juvenile race at Cheltenham on January 24. It's always good to get some experience into them round there when possible and I am really delighted with the way the horse is progressing. In fairness to our horse, I think he has improved quite a bit since Newbury on what was only his second race for us and he seems to be flying at the moment. It will be interesting to see what happens when they (Zaynar) meet again."

"I'm particularly excited about Walkon. He was giving 7lb to the Triumph favourite, Zaynar, when beaten for the only time at Newbury, and he has improved an awful lot for that run. I think he'd compare very favourably to the likes of Franchoek (second last year) and Penzance (2005 winner) and I couldn't be more pleased with his wellbeing at the moment, both mentally and physically. He is thoroughly enjoying life and has a tremendous attitude to everything he does."

Zaynar

"I don't know where the confidence came from. He has always jumped beautifully but does take an awful lot of work. He had a right good blow on the back straight and I am a little surprised how well he picked up. He is wonderfully well bred - almost too well bred - as he is out of a Prix Diane (French Oaks) winner and by Daylami. What has always been the plan is the four-year-old hurdle on Victor Chandler day at Ascot."
